Hardboard is similar to particleboard and medium density fiberboard, but with higher density, strength, and hardness because it is made of highly compressed blasted wood fibers.

The density of hard fiberboard is 500 kilograms per cubic meter (31 pounds per cubic foot) or higher, typically around 800-1040 kilograms per cubic meter (50-65 pounds per cubic foot). The difference between it and particleboard and medium density fiberboard is that the bonding of wood fibers does not require additional adhesive, and the existing lignin in the wood fibers is sufficient to bond the hard fiberboard together, although resin is usually added.
